Ivor Markman
About me
After graduating as a graphic designer from the Michaelis School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town, I started my media career with the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) TV in 1973 in Johannesburg.
Unfortunately the powers that be decided to push me into the sound department where I worked as a sound operator .
But the lure of a camera was far too strong and in 1978, after unsuccesfully applying to be transferred to camera work, I resigned and switched over to stills photography.
My first freelance work was for the Eastern Province Herald in Port Elizabeth where the shutter-bug really bit hard.
After moving to Cape Town I obtained employment as a press photographer with The Argus, Cape Herald and then the Cape Times newspapers.
After being named South African Press Photographer of the Year in 1985 I moved to Florida in the United States.
After a short stint there I moved to Sacramento, California before moving to Lake Tahoe in the Sierra Nevada mountains.
After six years I moved back to Sacramento where I freelanced, doing work mainly for Associated Press, the San Francisco Chronicle and many other newspapers.
In 1995 I returned to South Africa and once again worked as a photojournalist at The Herald.
I remained there until taking early retirement in 2011.
Since then I have been doing research for a book on the history of Port Elizabeth and doing freelance photojournalism.
So if you need someone to write a positive, honest and accurate description of your business along with imaginitive photography, then I'm the person to contact.
