Actuality

So often I'm asked the question: "What is your photographic speciality?"

How to answer the question is not so simple.

Having worked for newspapers most my working life I have been called upon to photograph just about everything from hard news, soft news, sport, product shots, food, fashion, landscapes, portraits, documentary features, travel stories, religious festivals, fairs, weddings, science - the list goes on and on.

But unfortunately, a sure way to switch off prospective clients is to say "I do anything and everything!"

So even though its quite correct to state this, in reality, you can't say it.

So what do you say?

After giving this much thought I have decided to call my speciality "ACTUALITY" because it's actually what I do.

An ACTUALITY event is an actual happening event, where people interact with one another, an event or situation where they are actually doing things.

So yes, even though I have been called upon to cover just about everything, the best way I can describe my photography is to say I take photographs of human reacting with people and things.

That includes hard news, soft news, sport, product shots, food, landscapes, features and travel stories.

Yes, there are times when you don't have people in photos so I'll cut them out of the discussion.

For clarification's sake, I'll put it another way - my speciality could be called "candid photography" but you need to be careful to consider it in all its various forms.

I prefer to call my speciality "ACTUALITY".

But you know what?

It doesn't matter what I call my photography.

The bottom line is "Do you want me to take your photos?"

I hope so!
